This is great news, ive always said to myself mysql should hire Andrew to work for them, but this is easily the next best thing

Thank you for your question. This surely needs to be clarified.

1) Andrew will work with us and we’ll kind of sponsor Sphinx development but we will not own Sphinx code.

2) Sphinx will continue be fully GPL. As Andrew has rights to all the code other licenses are possible, if you would like to embed sphinx for example.

Hello,

this is great news, if it goes in the direction of continuing public developments (and not privately licensed) on sphinx: will it truly be the case? The announcement above is not clear regarding this point.

Because if not, many wannabe sphinx users could feel inappropriate to invest their time into sphinx, and unfortunately switch to another public solution, like lucene.
