B,

Well... It was clear for long MySQL will try to do IPO as soon as major VC investments happened. This most likely means in the few years the company ether should go public or be sold to some large company. MySQL has leading positions on the market so IPO is perhaps better idea for the same reason as Google did not agree to be bought by Microsoft at the times it was small enough.

I worked for MySQL long enough to have some stock options so there is no need to kick myself.

Regarding minimum amount of hours - I know it, it is deliberate choice at this point not to have one. There are a lot of small guys out where who need some help but can't afford to buy a lot of hours helping them not mean they will likely to contact you as they grow larger or be your good referrals. We however have a bit higher rate on short projects just to cover the overhead.

Hi,

So you left MySQL about 6 months ago. I'm wondering if your kicking yourself due to the fact that there has been some rumors lately of MySQL going public. This of course could mean big money for the people working there with stock options.
Secondly, I'm not sure if you do this already but I know with small projects sometimes after the overhead, they almost dont seem financially viable to do them. Some consultants negate this by charging a minium amount of hours no matter if the whole project was only 1 hour long. Just a idea... I know it's not all about making money :-)

What is your opinion on the relationship between (1. Opensource commerical companies such as MySQL and Zend, 2. Users, 3. 3rd party supports) in the future?

That's quite interesting...
I have been working close to 10 years now on SQL server and find MySQL fascinating, though my job doesn't allow me to move from MS Project, excel, word and lotus notes, have been trying hard to pull out time to build small web apps to get comfortable in MySQL and get to the bottom of it

Some day would like to quit and do consulting like you guys are doing, you are my inspiration

Hi Peter,

You guys helped us alot while you were still working at MySQL. I wish you guys the best and it was nice to read how you guys go around and about with your new company. Hopefully you can help more people as good as you helped us.
