With the close of call for papers earlier this month, the Percona Live London conference committee was in full swing this past week reviewing all of the many submissions for November’s Percona Live London MySQL Conference.
The submissions are far ranging and cover some really interesting topics, making the lineup for Percona Live London really strong! What the committee looks for in a submission is how much “value” a talk will bring to the conference – this is to say it needs to be far more that a product demo. As such, real-world experiences are receiving much more favorable reviews, along with talks that cover methodologies the attendees will find invaluable.
So without further delay here’s a quick “sneak peak”, at some of the talks in the line up:
- Common Schema: DBAs Framework – (Shlomi Noach – Engineer, Outbrain)
This talk will discuss how to install (import) common_schema, schema analysis views, process & security views and routines, status monitoring and transaction analysis, SQL generating views and eval() and QueryScript: an SQL based scripting language.
Talk attendees should expect to find themselves familiar with the deployment and use of common_schema by the end of this talk, as well as be aware of QueryScript.
- Practical Sysbench – (Peter Boros, Consultant Percona)
A demo rich talk set to cover benchmarking MySQL and disk IO subsystems with sysbench and interpreting the results. Talk attendees should expect to find themselves familiar with use of sysbench, retrieving valuable metrics from the tests run and how to interpret the results correctly so as that conclusions may be drawn from the results such as a need for increased IO capacity.
- MySQL performance monitoring using statsd and graphite – (Art van Scheppingen, Head of database engineering Spil Games)
A real world experience talk, set to discuss how Spil Games migrated from available MySQL performance monitoring systems to their new internal standardized system using Statsd and Graphite, to meet their needs to scale their own monitoring systems as they scaled their MySQL deployments.
Attendees will gain insight into how and why Spil games moved from their existing monitoring solution to Statsd and Graphite whilst also improving granularity of the metrics collected.
- Building Data Warehouse with Hadoop and MySQL – (Zburivsky Danil, Consultant / MySQL DBA Pythian)
Discussing the challenges associated with hadoop related to building a robust data platform, reviewing Hive, Azkaban and various column orientated formats, and how they fit within the data warehouse model; aswell as how data pre-processing within MySQL can be used to overcome so of the shortcomings of using Hadoop for data warehousing.
Attendees of this talk should expect to gain insight into how to Hadoop can be used in conjunction with MySQL to provide data warehousing, and the nuances of data interaction between MySQL and Hadoop.
- The shard revisited: tools and techniques used at Etsy – (John Goulah, Dev Infrastructure Tools Lead Engineer, Etsy)
Covering the trials an tribulations of running a data store at the scale required by Etsy, which took several phases of iteration to get to where it is today. Talk attendees should expect to gain insight on how Etsy took their data store platform to where it is today, the pains they encountered and how there were overcome.
- Scaling 500,000,000 database tables and beyond – the WordPress.com story – (Barry Abrahamson Systems Wrangler, Automattic / WordPress)
As the title no doubt reveals this talk is the story of WordPress.com one of the largest platforms on the web to date; discussing their methods Barry notes “everyone thought we were crazy and that it wouldn’t scale”. Talk attendees should expect to gain insight on the current architecture powering one if the webs most popular platforms, and how this is all manageable with a small but dedicated team of sysadmins.
- MySQL, The Ebay classifieds way – (Luis Motta Campos Database Administrator, ebay Classifieds Group). Sharing the issues faced and the solutions adopted by Ebay to help their customers find what they’re looking for in their local communities be it apartments, jobs, couches to cars.Attendees to this talk should expect to gain insight into the EBay classifieds architecture, issues faces and solutions used to overcome them.
