I presented a webinar this week to give an overview of Tools and Techniques for Index Design. Even if you missed the webinar, you can register for it, and you’ll be emailed a link to the recording. I’d like to invite folks who are interested in tools for query optimization to attend the new Percona [...]
MySQL versions shootout
As part of work on “High Performance MySQL, 3rd edition”, Baron asked me to compare different MySQL version in some simple benchmark, but on decent hardware. So why not.
InnoDB Flushing: a lot of memory and slow disk
You may have seen in the last couple of weekly news posts that Baron mentioned we are working on a new adaptive flushing algorithm in InnoDB. In fact, we already have three such algorithms in Percona Server (reflex, estimate, keep_average). Why do we need one more? Okay, first let me start by showing the current [...]
Modeling MySQL Capacity by Measuring Resource Consumptions
There are many angles you can look at the system to predict in performance, the model baron has published for example is good for measuring scalability of the system as concurrency growths. In many cases however we’re facing a need to answer a question how much load a given system can handle when load is [...]
Death match! EBS versus SSD price, performance, and QoS
Is it a good idea to deploy your database into the cloud? It depends. I have seen it work well many times, and cause trouble at other times. In this blog post I want to examine cloud-based I/O. I/O matters a lot when a) the database’s working set is bigger than the server’s memory, or [...]
How InnoDB handles REDO logging
Xaprb (Baron) recently blogged about how InnoDB performs a checkpoint , I thought it might be useful to explain another important mechanism that affects both response time and throughput – The transaction log.
Why you should ignore MySQL’s key cache hit ratio
I have not caused a fist fight in a while, so it’s time to take off the gloves. I claim that somewhere around of 99% of advice about tuning MySQL’s key cache hit ratio is wrong, even when you hear it from experts. There are two major problems with the key buffer hit ratio, and [...]
MySQL Binaries Percona build10
We made new binaries for MySQL 5.0.67 build 10 which include next fixes: We addressed concerns about potential logging and statistics overhead, so now you can fully turn on / off query statistics for microslow patch and user statistics in runtime. Next variables were added:
1 2 3 4 5 6 | | slow_query_log | ON | | slow_query_log_file | /var/lib/mysql/slow_query.log | for compatibility with MySQL 5.1 and | userstat_running | OFF | to control gathering of user statistics. |
With both slow_query_log = OFF and userstat_running = OFF [...]

How fast can MySQL Process Data
Reading Barons post about Kickfire Appliance and of course talking to them directly I learned a lot in their product is about beating data processing limitations of current systems. This raises valid question how fast can MySQL process (filter) data using it current architecture ? I decided to test the most simple case – what [...]
